5 Easy Ways To Boost Your Style

1. Up Your Warmth Game

This is simplest step of all: Get yourself a great hat and scarf combo! I’d suggest going with a knitted hat but avoid the slouched kind like the plague, their time has come and gone.

This time, reach for one that you can fold back up to form a tight band around your head, like Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. And why not introduce a bit of colour? I favour a bold red one personally but why not go for autumnal colours like khaki, orange, green or bright blue?

As for the scarf, stick to one in an insulating material like wool or cotton blends, in a neutral colour such as grey or navy so it can be go with everything else you already own. However, this season is all about a dandy pattern, so you could opt for a polka dot or paisley version.

2. Pick Up Some Cord Trousers

Corduroy is a great material for colder months due to its durability and insulation. Think of cord trousers as your updated chinos. A great starter pair is a brown or khaki version because they are fantastic colours for autumn and work well with nearly every other colour you can think of.

3. A Navy Peacoat

If you don’t already have one, get one. You want one that ends a couple of inches above your knees and has a slim enough cut to still be able to fit a suit jacket underneath.

4. Shawl So Hard

A thick shawl neck cardigan could be the most versatile item you own this season. Providing more warmth and style than your ordinary cardigan, it can function in any situation.

Wear it over a casual shirt and knitted tie for a night out or under a suit for an extra layer of warmth on the commute to work. Hell, why not wear it over the suit?

This season, try to branch out into an interesting colour – think greens, oranges, browns or any other colour the leaves can turn. At the very least, go with a white/ecru version for the ultimate in autumn style.

5. Re-boot Your Boots

This time around, when it comes to making a decision on which boot to get for the rain, sleet and snow go for something a bit more dressy. Think black or brown leather (no distressing) in a cap toe or brogue that can be worn just as easily with a suit as a pair of jeans.

You’ll be surprised at how your overall appearance will be instantly lifted once you swap those beaten up military boots for a pair of sleek and sophisticated lace-up dress boots.

Dress Your Body Type: Skinny

Regardless of the body type Mother Nature gave you, making the most of what you were given goes a long way to helping you look and feel more confident and attractive, both to yourself and to others. In the second installment of our Dress Your Body Type series, here we take a look at areas ranging from fashion to grooming in which skinny men can focus their efforts on to look their personal best. At the end of the article, you’ll also find a useful checklist that you can print out and take with you on your next shopping venture so that you’ll consistently come out of each store with pieces that are just right for you.
A skinny body type defined
Skinny body types are sometimes described as ectomorphic. Whether you’re tall, of average height or short, this kind of body is characterized by a light build, lean muscle, small joints, long limbs, a flat chest, and small shoulders. Ectomorphs typically also have a fast metabolism and find it difficult to gain weight, no matter what they eat or how many weights they lift.
Pros and cons of dressing a skinny body
A slim frame is significantly easier to dress than a large one simply because clothes hang better on thinner bodies. Another benefit of having a slender physique is that it’s easy for you to be in style because trendy clothing not only looks good on you, it’s made readily available to you by the fashion industry. And, if you’re into high-end apparel, your size is more frequently available in stores because your body shape is what designers prefer to dress (for both aesthetic and sample/pattern size reasons).
While there are obvious benefits to dressing a skinny body type, there remain, however, a few challenges. Notably, wearing ill-fitting clothes will result in coming off as a boy playing grown-up. A further and rather vexing problem this body type faces is finding clothes that fit at budget-friendly mass retailers, which -- in America -- frequently size up (offering sizes up to 3XL). To solve this problem, become a fan of European imports like Zara, H&M, and Topman, which are skinny-body type- and budget- friendly.
dress your body type: the guide
Fit
No matter what your body type, proper-fitting clothes are vital to being a well-dressed man. Though a frequent mistake made by men with skinny body types is wearing oversize clothing in an effort to bulk up visually, skinny men actually benefit from having their clothes tailored more than any other body type. Hunting down a reputable tailor and taking all recent purchases to him will ensure you're showing off your frame to its best advantage.
When deciding what to buy in the first place, favor body-skimming dress shirts and tees that permit some movement in the fabric (look for “Slim Fit” models at your mass retailer). Check the label on your tops too, avoiding anything that contains elastic as these garments tend to stick too closely to your body rather than gliding over it. For a similar reason, skinny jeans should also be banished from your closet as they will either make you look malnourished or like you're wearing leggings -- neither of which is attractive in the least. When it comes to denim, stick with straight-leg or slim-fit boot cut jeans instead.

How To Dress Your Age: 20s

There’s a boatload of age-appropriate advice out there for 40-somethings with backward baseball caps and a closet full of seizure-inducing striped shirts. Sure, you can tell those guys to stop taking their style cues from the house dads of Orange County (and don’t worry, we will), but what about the baby-faced coeds, recent grads and corporate climbers?
Turns out, the 20s are filled with their own fair share of decadal difficulties. The problem here, however, arises from a feeble attempt to look more mature (ironically, the exact opposite of the ill-fated quest for eternal youth that comes later in life) and simply not knowing any better. That’s why we’ve developed some rules and regulations for these all-important formative years. Here’s guide on how to dress your age: the 20s.
The guide: 20s
Experiment
You did it in biology lab and hopefully you’re no stranger to it in the bedroom. The same trial-and-error approach should apply to clothing. Most men in their 20s still have no idea who they are as a person let alone how to dress, so feel free to test the waters with fashion trends. You’ll win some and lose some, but always remember to maintain an open mind. This may be the only chance you’ll ever have in life to push your luck -- and get away with it.
Lose the logos
The next tip on how to dress your age is to pull the plug on the Abercrombie & Fitch festival from high school. Mike’s Bikes? Tomahawk Track & Field? By now, your clothing shouldn’t advertise anything but your impeccable sense of personal style. Graduate to plain tees, polos and fitted button-downs -- and quit the kid’s stuff.
Back to basics
Start from scratch and invest in a few core pieces like a tailored blazer, jeans and dress shirts that aren’t shapeless sacks. They’ll fast become your everyday go-to tools for sartorial success and stick around for years to come.
Find the perfect fit
Drop all the dough you want on clothing. If it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t matter. And chances are your entire wardrobe, from suits and dress shirts to tees and shorts, is in desperate need of a diet. Gone are the days when it was customary and, dare we say, even cool to sport a silhouette large enough for three of you. You’re in your 20s -- you’re growing up. So, make sure that the shoulder seams actually hit you at the shoulder, the torso is trim but not tight and the rear doesn’t look like it’s ready to make a special delivery.

slightly more casual than smart

As for some occasions a more casual approach is required. Put this technique to use only where you know the host and perhaps expect them to turn out slightly more casual than smart.
A pair of mature trainers is certainly worth considering when looking to dress down a look. Equally, if you don’t quite feel comfortable with that option, opt for suitably structured casual oriented alternatives.

Smart-Casual Outfit - Making Use of Knitwear

Layering is becoming an essential skill as the calendar months fly by. Knitwear is a great way to add some warmth and another dimension to your smart-casual looks in the colder months.
A classic V-neck is the perfect base, especially if used alongside a tie to smarten up some denim. Alternatively, you could add texture through a cable knit or chunky cardigan. For a slightly different approach, consider a long-sleeved polo shirt type jumper over a shirt and tie pairing.
Loafers work well with this look. Although, if the weather is a little brisk, consider wearing socks with them- think Ivy League prep.

Smart-Casual outfit is more appropriate choice for offices within the creative industries and those with a penchant for ‘dress-down Fridays’

Denim continues to emerge as a more appropriate choice for offices within the creative industries and those with a penchant for ‘dress-down Fridays’. When it comes to jeans in a smart-casual setting keep them dark, clean and well fitted. Light wash jeans certainly have their place in the wardrobe, as Will recently discussed, but for all smarter purposes stick to a darker indigo wash.
A plain white shirt and casual blazer gives this look an edge of refinement. Alternatively, you could opt for a cardigan or waistcoat while accessorising with a tie. Keep the shoes suitably smart, depending on where you’re going – desert boots or brogues are often suitable for most occasions.

Simple Smart-Casual outfit

The most basic of smart casual outfits consists of a chino, shirt, blazer and smart shoe combination. With the resurgence of chinos as the popular go-to legwear choice, they’ve become an acceptable option to wear as a smart-casual piece, in place of more tailored trousers.
A block-colour shirt in a traditional hue i.e. white, blue, pink etc. is a safe option, but a simple patterned shirt could be used to bring some personality and individuality to a look. A navy blazer is one of the most versatile pieces in a man’s wardrobe – it seemingly tops almost every ‘essential’ list – so it’s definitely worth investing.
Chinos in a safe, neutral colour such as grey are impossible to do wrong, especially when married with a pair of rich chocolate brown shoes. If you’re opting for a belt, keep it slim, smart and matching the leather of your shoes – you don’t want fall victim to a rookie style mistake.
To add some punch to your ensemble, accessorise with a pocket square. For true smart casual, however, leave the tie back home and the top button undone.
